We had a very busy week here at Synergy!

Mrs. D was our substitute two  days this week.  I was able to spend time reading with each child individually.  We have a classful of amazing readers.  It is wonderful to see how much they have improved since the beginning of the year.  Thank you for reading with your students everyday!

Our next unit in writer’s workshop we will be working on letter writing.  We are partnering up with a class at my previous school in Oregon, and will have pen pals that we will be writing back and forth between for the remainder of the year.  We began our friendship with this class on Thursday when we Skyped with them. We learned a few things about Oregon and their school, (like they have P.E. outside all year) and got to meet each of the students.  Next week the students will learn who their pen pal will be.

On Wednesday afternoon we loaded up on the bus and headed over to WCS for the ¾ grade choir concert.  The students loved riding the bus as a class and getting to see the “big kids”.  In class we have been working on being humble but our class was complimented as the best behaved during the performance, and we had a substitute!

For our school wide celebration the K-9 unit the State Police came.   Michelle LeBlanc, Senior Trooper, K-9 Handler brought her partner Casko! Casko is an 8 year old German Shepherd.  As you can imagine 400 kids in a gym with a dog was quite exciting.  Casko was able to show many of the commands that he knows.  The favorite was when she had him bark.  Somehow every student that wanted to was able to pet Casko.

The Penguin Unit is in full swing.  There is a lot of talking about penguins, acting like penguins and waddling down the halls like penguins.  We have studied about 6 different types of penguins.  We have gathered information and organized it into charts which will help us compare the different species.  The students also measured and cut string to the height of the different penguins.   Many students were amazed to learn that they are shorter than the Emperor penguin.
