We had a very busy week here at Synergy!

Mrs. D was our substitute two  days this week.  I was able to spend time reading with each child individually.  We have a classful of amazing readers.  It is wonderful to see how much they have improved since the beginning of the year.  Thank you for reading with your students everyday!

Our next unit in writer’s workshop we will be working on letter writing.  We are partnering up with a class at my previous school in Oregon, and will have pen pals that we will be writing back and forth between for the remainder of the year.  We began our friendship with this class on Thursday when we Skyped with them. We learned a few things about Oregon and their school, (like they have P.E. outside all year) and got to meet each of the students.  Next week the students will learn who their pen pal will be.

On Wednesday afternoon we loaded up on the bus and headed over to WCS for the ¾ grade choir concert.  The students loved riding the bus as a class and getting to see the “big kids”.  In class we have been working on being humble but our class was complimented as the best behaved during the performance, and we had a substitute!

For our school wide celebration the K-9 unit the State Police came.   Michelle LeBlanc, Senior Trooper, K-9 Handler brought her partner Casko! Casko is an 8 year old German Shepherd.  As you can imagine 400 kids in a gym with a dog was quite exciting.  Casko was able to show many of the commands that he knows.  The favorite was when she had him bark.  Somehow every student that wanted to was able to pet Casko.

The Penguin Unit is in full swing.  There is a lot of talking about penguins, acting like penguins and waddling down the halls like penguins.  We have studied about 6 different types of penguins.  We have gathered information and organized it into charts which will help us compare the different species.  The students also measured and cut string to the height of the different penguins.   Many students were amazed to learn that they are shorter than the Emperor penguin.

Thank you for making our Publishing Party such a huge success.  The attendance was well beyond my highest expectations.  The students loved sharing their stories with you all.  The students worked hard on their stories and it was a fantastic way to celebrate the many successes they have enjoyed while writing this year.

We had guest speakers from TD Bank visit our classroom on Wednesday.  They came to our class to talk about spending and saving money.  They had four different activities for the students that taught them about the value of coins, as well as how and why to save money.  At the end of the presentation the students who each had two pennies got the chance to buy a sticker and a pencil case or to save their money.  There was a lot of deep thinking happening with the students.  The students also received a bag that had a coloring book and a coupon.  The coupon is worth $10.  If your student has a savings account or opens a saving account at a TD Bank they will receive the $10.

The frigid temperatures and no recess have ramped up the energy level in the classroom.  This has necessitated a few breaks from our regular schedule.  These breaks have turned into a fantastic community building experience for the class.  We played 4 corners, hide the eraser, did yoga, stretched, did pushups and utilized 10 minutes when the gym was empty to just run around and go crazy.

We will be having our next Publishing Party Friday January 18th from 8:00-8:30am and you are all invited!   Any and all family members are welcome to come.  The students will be bringing home invitations early next week.

Synergy earned a whole team sledding party last Thursday.  All 4 classes filled their honey jars and the teachers came up with the fantastic idea of a sledding party.  We couldn’t have picked a better day for the party, with warm temperatures and sunny skies. The sledding party was great fun for all the students of synergy and all the adult kids that work with Synergy.

In reader’s workshop and read aloud we have been focusing in on characters and settings.  We are currently reading the BFG by Roald Dahl.  All of Roald Dahl’s books are amazing as they have such rich characters and such detailed settings. Please encourage your children to tell you about the characters and settings in the books they are reading and the books you are reading together.

Another quick reminder please do not send any snacks that contain peanuts.   There are several students in Synergy that are allergic to peanuts.  Since every student in Synergy visits our classroom it is extremely important to not expose those that are allergic, to peanuts, or even the oils that could possibly be left behind.   An exposure can and often leads to an ambulance ride and a visit to the ER for the allergic students.

Students at the K-8 schools within CSSU will be changing e-mail addresses next week. The email address will change from cssu.us to cssu.org.  We are making this change to allow teachers and students to better share documents and collaborate on projects and to facilitate the 8th grade transition to CVU, thus creating one student email account lasting K-12.  The current email address you have been using will not work.  Please send an email to your student and include any email address (Family members) that your student may want to email.  Their new email address will be in this format  firstNamelastName@cssu.org.

This week we had a celebration on 12/12/12 at 12:12:12.  We began with 12 jumping jacks to count down.  We then watched one of my all-time favorite parts or Sesame Street, Pinball 12  .  Many students brought in collections of 12 things to share.  We even had a special delivery of 12 balloons.  During math the students wrote 12 or more equations that equaled 12.  In reading groups students read with a partner with the goal of reading 12 books.  The students filled their honey jar again and they choose 12 minutes of extra recess.  It was a fun filled day!

On Thursday we had two CVU students come to our class to teach us the colors in Spanish.  Alicia, one of the students, was a Rotary exchange student from La Paz, Mexico.  We learned the colors rojo (red), azul (blue), verde (green), rosa (pink), blanco (white), Amarillo (yellow).  The students had a very fun and active class.  At the end Alicia read the class  Llama, Llama Red Pajama in Spanish.

Friday was an exciting day with two special treats.  First we visited Ms. Schwartz’s class in Horizon.  Their class has been working on a reader’s theater play as a way to practice their fluency.  The readers did an amazing job of projecting their voices and reading with expression.  As a school wide award for filling the whole school filling the beehive the students were treated to the Musical Petting Zoo.  During music the class was able to listen and try many different symphony instruments.  The students’ favorites were…
